Quick guide to securing your most precious possessions

January 2021

When it comes to protecting your cherished possessions, storing them out of sight is not always enough. Whether it’s heirloom jewellery, fine art, or a vintage collectible, every item has a story worth preserving.

It’s important to let your insurance company know about your valuables, so their true value is covered if something happens and you need to claim.

With some contents insurance policies, certain items may only be covered up to a specified amount. For example, if your $5,000 engagement ring gets lost and you make a claim, if it’s not specified in your policy, you might only be paid up to your policy cover limit, which may be a lot less.

How can I protect my valuable items?

AMI Contents Insurance allows ’specified items’ to be listed, with their full price to be included with the rest of your contents. This may change the premium you pay or your excess, but this would be far less than coming up with an extra few thousand to replace a diamond ring. To add a valuable item to your contents insurance, contact AMI and we can help. You may need to provide us an up-to-date insurance valuation to increase the value of your 'specified item' or to add a new item.

Other safety tips

After insuring your precious valuables, there are several precautions you can take to ensure your pieces remain safe.

  • Invest in protective coverings for artwork and make sure they are well secured to the wall. This not only protects them from damage, but from prying hands as well.
  • Lock antiques in cases and place slip-proof mats under them.
  • Small items or pieces of jewellery can be locked in a secure, fireproof safe. These are great places for your things to remain safe while you’re on holiday or not wearing or using them. Sure, your possessions are covered financially, but nothing can replace sentimental value.
