Habitat for Humanity builds strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter. Every day they work towards making New Zealand a place where everyone has a decent place to live.
Every year, Habitat for Humanity makes a difference for thousands of New Zealanders living in sub-standard housing conditions. Habitat works with families to address their housing need by repairing and renovating homes. They also make home ownership a reality for many families through their Progressive Home Ownership programme.
At AMI we know that safe and stable homes help to build strong and healthy families, as well as more resilient communities. AMI supports Habitat’s philosophy that everyone deserves a decent place to live. Our partnership aims to help Habitat get closer to their target of changing the lives of 75,000 kiwis, living in sub-standard housing, over the next three years.
The Aotearoa Housing Survey was commissioned as part of our three-year partnership with Habitat. The results have shown us that several hundred thousand Kiwi families are experiencing unacceptable living conditions. This survey has provided AMI and Habitat with critical information to help understand the scale of the issues people are facing so that we can strengthen our response and help New Zealanders enjoy better living conditions. You can read more about the Aotearoa Housing Survey results below.
We have teamed up with Habitat to provide some practical tips on how you can make your own home warmer, drier and safer, check out the videos below to learn more.
Heating a home can be difficult and sometimes costly for many low-income families. As a community housing provider, Habitat responds to communities throughout Aotearoa with unique solutions. This includes creating warmer, healthier homes, through initiatives such as installing heat pumps, hot water insulation and providing curtains. The Habitat Curtain Bank offers low-income Auckland families free double-lined, full length curtains for their homes. Through upcycling good quality curtains at its own curtain making facility, curtains are made to suit the specific needs of each family they work with.
There are so many ways to get involved with the worthwhile work Habitat for Humanity do.
Habitat run a wide range of programmes that help families in need of decent and affordable housing. From their home repair programme that ensures low income families can access essential repairs to their home, to supporting families on a pathway to home ownership through their Progressive Home Ownership programme, they work with families to foster resilience, self-reliance, and stability for the long term.
