Frequently asked questions about insuring Electric Vehicles

Does AMI insure electric (EV), hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) vehicles?

Yes, we do. We generally cover standard-spec electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles with our existing car insurance policies (e.g. Toyota Prius, Nissan Leaf, Hyundai Ioniq, Mitsubishi Outlander and Tesla).

Is there a difference in cost when insuring an EV, hybrid or PHEV?

The price of car insurance is calculated based on a number of factors, such as the vehicle year of manufacture, make and model, location and driver profile. However, there is currently no rating differentiation based purely on fuel type.

Does cover differ between EV or petrol-powered cars?

No, there is no difference in cover for EVs and petrol cars. With AMI Full Cover Car Insurance, you get the same benefits, so your EV, hybrid or PHEV would be covered for accidental loss or damage, fire, theft, and any other optional extras you purchase with your cover.

Does AMI Roadside Rescue cover electric vehicles?

Yes, we offer AMI Roadside Rescue for both electric vehicles and petrol/diesel. We will tow your vehicle to the nearest charging unit.

What happens if I lose my charger?

The charger/charging cable that comes with your car from the manufacturer is covered under our Full Cover Car Insurance policy. Please read the full details of cover in the AMI Car Insurance policy wording.

Are charging stations covered by my car insurance?

If you choose to install a charging station in your home, it wouldn’t be covered under your car insurance. However, it is covered under an AMI House Insurance policy, if permanently wired in by an electrician.

Does AMI car insurance cover my EV battery?

It depends. Damage to, or failure of your EV battery would be classified as mechanical/ electrical loss or damage. While AMI doesn’t cover mechanical or electrical issues caused by general wear and tear to the vehicle, you are covered if you've taken out our Full Cover Car Insurance, where your vehicle suffers sudden and accidental mechanical, electrical or electronic loss caused by:

  • Fire
  • Collision
  • Overturning
  • Immersion in water
  • Natural disaster
  • Flood
  • Malicious damage
  • Theft
  • Illegal conversion

Your policy doesn't cover you for a sudden breakdown (unless caused by one of the events listed above).
For example:

  • Your EV’s battery is damaged due to a collision – this is covered.
  • Your EV’s battery is damaged due to wear and tear – this is not covered.

There is also limited cover for EV batteries under Third Party, Fire and Theft policies.

Does AMI cover electric motorcycles?

Yes, we do. AMI treats electric motorcycles the same as equivalent petrol-powered motorbikes and these can be covered under our Motorcycle policy. With our Full Cover Motorcycle Insurance, your electric motorcycle would be covered for accidental loss or damage, fire, theft, and any other optional extras you purchase with your cover.

1. Only applies if you have ‘Full Cover’ and ‘Agreed Value’ as stated in the Policy Schedule.

The information provided is intended as a guide only. Terms, conditions, limits and exclusions apply to AMI car insurance policies. Please check the wording in your Policy Schedule for details of cover. The provision of cover is subject to the underwriting criteria that apply at the time.
