Staying Safe in Wild Wind

January 2021

With rain, storms and cyclones comes wind that can reach high speeds – toppling trees and flinging furniture. It’s important to prepare for high wind as early as possible, so you can get inside with plenty of time to spare. We’ve compiled a few tips on how to keep yourself and your family safe before, during and after wild wind.

Before high winds

  • Listen to your local radio station and keep up to date with any civil defence and MetService updates.
  • If any outdoor furniture (garbage bins, chairs and tables, umbrellas, BBQs, toys etc) can be brought inside, bring it in.
  • For any large items like trampolines and portable swing sets, tie them down securely.
  • Ensure pool and spa covers are secure.
  • Trim or cut any loose or potentially dangerous branches near your home that could pose a risk if dislodged by wind.
  • Have a household or business emergency plan and practice it regularly.
  • Download the Red Cross Hazard App (available for free through the App Store and Google Play) for alerts, warnings, safety information and more.

During high winds

  • Do not go outside or travel unless absolutely necessary.
  • If you’re driving, slow down and remain alert, or pull over to a safe place – clear from anything that may fall on or damage the car.
  • Close curtains to stop glass spreading if a window is shattered.
  • Keep listening for updates.

After high winds

  • Only go outside when you’re sure it’s safe to.
  • Check on friends and neighbours to make sure they’re ok.
  • Check with your local council and NZTA for updates on road closures or blockages.
  • If any powerlines are down, clear the area (stay at least eight meters away) and call the emergency services or a local power provider. Treat any fallen power lines as live.
  • Assess and take photos of any damage, and get in contact with your insurance company.
