With winter now in full swing, it's important our homes are ready for the cooler months. Below are our top tips to prepare your home for the chill.
Stay warm with the right insulation.
Check your insulation notice to make sure you've got the right level of insulation. This can usually be found near a trap-door that provides access to your floor or ceiling space.
Make sure your windows are fitted correctly and keep them closed at night. This includes stopping draughts that come through holes and gaps around windows and doors. A draught snake, self-adhesive foam or brush strips can help here.
Double lined curtains that reach the floor help keep the heat in. So if you don't have any, it could be worth the investment as it'll save you in heating costs.
Stay dry with good ventilation.
Use an extractor fan in kitchen and bathrooms to help reduce moisture indoors.
Open the windows for at least 15 minutes each day. Good air circulation helps reduce dampness indoors.
If possible, dry clothes outside. Again, this helps reduce moisture in the home.
Stay safe with the right safety features.
Install smoke alarms in every room and test them regularly. Also, make sure your rangehood filters have been cleaned and there's a fire extinguisher nearby just in case. Lastly, make sure power points or plug boards aren't overloaded around the house.
Makes sure all windows and doors are able to be locked securely.
