Keeping your home fire safe

September 2018

Daylight savings marks the time of year when we can almost taste the warm summer weather coming. It’s the time of year when we put our clocks forward an hour – and get an extra hour of daylight at the end of the day!

It’s also the time of year when Fire and Emergency New Zealand encourages us all to test our smoke alarms. If a fire starts in your home, a working smoke alarm is your only voice – so to keep your family safe you need to ensure your smoke alarms are sorted in four simple steps:

  1. Choose a long life photoelectric smoke alarm. They cost a little more, but the benefits are huge. They last up to 10 years – which means no ‘flat battery beeps,’ and no climbing up on ladders to replace batteries
  1. Install smoke alarms in the right places in your home. Fire and Emergency New Zealand recommend you put one in every bedroom, one in the hallway outside bedrooms, and one in the living area of your home. Don’t put them in the kitchen, bathroom or laundry – these areas are prone to false alarms.
  1. Check your alarms. Test the alarm to make sure they’re working and clear dust and debris by vacuuming over and around your alarms regularly.

  2. Dispose of your alarm if it fails when you test it. These need to be put in your normal rubbish collection.
